It was by chance that Vortex Engineering got into making ATMs. After several iterations in association with IIT-Madras, Vortex designed an ATM that could be installed in rural areas. Now, Vortex has about 700 machines installed across the country and has also developed an ATM that can be installed in urban areas, branded Ecoteller.
Once the ATM business started growing, Kannan decided to move the textile machinery business out of Vortex and founded Microspin Machine Works, in 2011. He is the CEO and Director of Microspin.

International Finance Corporation invests $2.7 million in ATM firm Vortex Engineering

IFC, a member of the World Bank Group, is investing $2.7 million as equity in Vortex Engineering to help the company expand its network of automated teller machines across India’s rural and semi-urban areas where people have limited or no banking services.
